Filipino Spaghetti
Recipe by MG Sanchez at Hungry Huy.
Ingredients
- For the sauce:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 5 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground pork
- 16 fl oz canned tomato sauce
- 4 fl oz banana ketchup
- 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon fish sauce
- 5 hot dogs, sliced on an angle
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Velveeta or cheddar cheese, for topping
- For the pasta:
- 1 lb dried spaghetti
- 10 cups water
- 2 teaspoons salt
Steps
- Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Cook the onion 3–5 minutes until soft, then add the garlic for 30 seconds.
- Add the ground pork and cook 5–7 minutes until browned.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, banana ketchup, fish sauce, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then lower to medium-low and simmer 5 minutes to thicken.
- Add the hot dogs and simmer 5 more minutes. Taste and add salt and pepper.
- Meanwhile, boil the water with the salt and cook the spaghetti according to the package. Drain, saving a little pasta water in case the sauce needs thinning. Don't rinse the pasta.
- Plate the spaghetti, ladle the sauce on top, and finish with cheese. Serve right away.
